Chaitra is the first month of the Hindu lunar calendar, marking the beginning of the Hindu New Year in many regions of India. Falling between March and April in the English calendar, it heralds the arrival of spring (Vasant Ritu) and symbolizes new beginnings, growth, and auspiciousness. One of the most significant festivals of this month is Ram Navami, celebrated as the birth anniversary of Lord Rama, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The month is also renowned for Chaitra Navratri, a nine-day festival dedicated to Goddess Durga, observed with fasting, prayers, and rituals. Chaitra Maas is regarded as a spiritually vibrant time, filled with festivals, sacred observances, and prayers for prosperity, health, and divine blessings. Key Tithis and Festivals: Chaitra Shukla Pratipada: Marks the beginning of Chaitra Maas and Chaitra Navratri; an auspicious day for new beginnings. Celebrated as Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra and Ugadi in South India. Chaitra Shukla Navami: Ram Navami — Celebrates the birth of Lord Rama, symbolizing righteousness and the victory of dharma. Chaitra Shukla Ekadashi: Kamada Ekadashi — A fasting day dedicated to Lord Vishnu, believed to fulfill desires and remove sins. Chaitra Purnima: Hanuman Jayanti — Celebrates the birth of Lord Hanuman, a symbol of strength, devotion, and service. Chaitra Krishna Amavasya: Amavasya (New Moon) — A sacred day for Pitru Tarpan (ancestral offerings), charity, and spiritual cleansing; marks the conclusion of Chaitra Maas.
